A Message from Phil Stichter, Vice Chairman

Greetings,

The past few years have been both very challenging and very rewarding for the Griffith Foundation.

We initiated an adjunct professorship program to help colleges and universities get risk management and insurance programs started or to expand existing ones.

We developed an insurance executive-in-residence program to introduce students to the real world of insurance.

We awarded close to one hundred scholarships to students at various colleges and universities to encourage their study of risk management and insurance.

And, we made major strides in expanding our educational programs for public policymakers by conducting two major education seminars in one year. Previously we had only conducted one every other year.

These seminars, conducted in cooperation with the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) are specifically designed for insurance committee chairs of state legislatures. Forty-six committee chairs representing twenty-eight states (from New York to California and from Minnesota to Louisiana) attended our last two sessions.

Since the program’s inception in 1993, insurance committee chairs from forty-four states have now attended our committee chair seminars.

To the best of our knowledge we are the only organization providing education programs for state legislators and other public policymakers on the basic principles of risk management and insurance.

The Foundation also offers one-half to one-day seminars for state insurance committee members.

Our seminars are unique because they focus not on legislative issues that change over time but on the durable concepts of risk management and the principles of insurance. The faculty for our seminars are all noted professors of risk management and insurance from colleges and universities across the country.

All costs for developing, presenting, and hosting our seminars are underwritten by the Griffith Foundation. No public funds are used.

The Griffith Foundation continues to maintain a strong relationship with NCOIL. The Foundation has sponsored special presentations at NCOIL's last five meetings. Our professors provide the contextual background that precede panel discussions on public policy issues of concern to NCOIL members.

We also work closely with the American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA), the professional association of professors of risk management and insurance, to develop programs to support the academic community and continue to support Gamma Iota Sigma, the national collegiate insurance society for students.

The Griffith Foundation is represented on its board of directors of the Society of Insurance Research and maintains an ongoing working relationships with the Insurance Information Institute, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Southern Risk and Insurance Association, and the Western Risk and Insurance Association.

We continue to be a co-sponsor of the Central Ohio Insurance Education Day and remain an active member of the Insurance Hall of Fame Honors Committee of the International Insurance Society.

A special thanks to all who have supported and continue to support the Griffith Foundation and its programs. As a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, educational corporation, the Griffith Foundation relies solely on tax-deductible contributions to fund its education programs. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Philip W. Stichter
Vice Chairman
